Hymenoplsty is a simple operation that is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation. However, if the surgeon considers it more proper or if the patient requests it, the surgery may also be performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure the surgeon “sews” the torn edges of the hymen together using fine, dissolvable sutures. The hymen has two layers and one of them will be sewn together to look intact. In case this isn’t possible for one reason or the other, the surgeon can “create” a new hymen using the lips of the vagina. The procedure usually lasts about 30-45 minutes and there is the possibility for it to be done on an outpatient basis.
Swelling and discomfort are frequent after hymenoplasty surgery. They usually last for a short while. The patient should expect these side effects to disappear in 2-3 weeks. After the surgery the patients will have some packing left in the treated area that needs to be removed the second day. It is best to avoid sexual intercourse for about 6 weeks. The stitches will dissolve on their own, so there is no need to worry about them.
The average cost for hymenoplasty is about 1050 Euros . This includes the fees of the medical and surgical staff handling the patient’s case, including the surgeon and the medical staff, a two-night accommodation at the hotel.
